Last week, we had the privilege of spending time at Marist Regional College, delivering the Life After School program to 160 Year 10 students. Over the course of the sessions, classrooms were filled with honest conversations, thoughtful questions and a genuine curiosity about what life looks like beyond school.

The Life After School program is designed to bridge the gap between education and adulthood, focusing on the practical life skills that young people often wish they had learned earlier. At Marist, students engaged deeply with topics such as budgeting, understanding income and expenses, housing options, car expenses and how to change a tyre and the realities of managing money in the real world.

What stood out most was the level of engagement. Students weren’t just listening, they were participating. They asked real questions about renting, saving, working while studying, and how to avoid common mistakes. These are conversations that matter, and seeing students feel confident enough to ask them is exactly why this program exists.

We welcomed in our guest speakers in session 2, Laura Johnson OAM from THEIRS and Bree from Housing Choices Tasmania. Laura spoke about mental health and the importance of self care. Bree spoke about living out of home and what to expect when you rent/buy.

A huge thank you to the staff at Marist Regional College for their warm welcome and ongoing support. It was also fantastic to hear positive feedback from our partner organisations, who commented on how interactive and respectful the students were throughout the sessions. The interest and enthusiasm from everyone involved reinforced just how important these conversations are. A shoutout to ABC for capturing the day and we cant wait to share the story with you.

Programs like Life After School are about more than information, they’re about empowerment. When young people understand their options and have practical tools to support their decisions, they leave school feeling more confident, capable and prepared for the next chapter.

We’re incredibly grateful for the opportunity to work with Marist Regional College and look forward to continuing these important conversations with students across Tasmania and beyond.
